Exhibit of 19th Century Paintings from Hudson River School Opens Boscobel Exhibition Gallery

The Glorious Scenery Must Ever Excite inaugural exhibit for new gallery

Frank Anderson, Breakneck/Mountain, Hudson Highlands, 1878, oil on canvas 10 x 16 3/8", David and Laura Grey Collection

Geoffrey Platt Jr., Executive Director of Boscobel House and Gardens, has announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art exhibition gallery on the lower floor of the historic Boscobel House. The Glorious Scenery Must Ever Excite: Nineteenth Century American Paintings of the Hudson Highlands, will inaugurate the Exhibition Gallery on Wednesday, July 2. The exhibit, open to all visitors to Boscobel, will be on display through October 1.

Spectacular views of the Hudson River and Highlands greet guests as they stroll the grounds of Boscobel. These views of Crow's Nest, Storm King, and Sugar Loaf Mountains, as well as West Point, have inspired poets and painters for centuries and great works, many that will be in the exhibit, have depicted the majesty of the River and its surroundings. It will be a unique experience for visitors to the exhibition to witness both the views as well as the artwork they inspired

The exhibition, curated by Kenneth W. Maddox, Ph.D, includes 29 paintings by Hudson River School artists assembled especially for Boscobel from private collections and public institutions. Artists include Frank Anderson, Samuel Colman, Jasper F. Cropsey, David Johnson, Thomas P. Rossiter and John Ferguson Weir. Dr. Maddox is the art historian for the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and an Adjunct Lecturer at New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

"We are thrilled that Ken Maddox was able to serve as the guest curator for this inaugural exhibit," said Geoffrey Platt. "This is an exciting expansion for Boscobel that we believe will enhance the experience for all of our visitors. To celebrate the painters of the Hudson River School, many of whom were inspired by the landscapes in Boscobel's environs, seems the perfect way to introduce the Exhibition Gallery."

In discussing the inaugural exhibit, Dr. Maddox commented, "Boscobel House, celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, overlooks Constitution Island across to West Point and is set in one of the most spectacular scenic areas along the Hudson River. The area attracted numerous nineteenth century artists, both leading members of the Hudson River School, as well as lesser known painters of considerable talent I felt it was appropriate that an exhibition at Boscobel, in its newly-created gallery, commemorates the anniversary with views from its vicinity. The paintings in the exhibit are of views of the Hudson north from West Point to the Newburgh-Fishkill area and looking south, to Cold Spring and Indian Fallsthus creating a comprehensive display of images within a limited geographical area."

The Exhibition Gallery, over 1200 square feet in size, will be open during regular Boscobel hours, Wednesday Monday, 9:30am-5pm. Admission for House tour and the Exhibition Gallery is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors; and $7 for children. Admission for the grounds and the Exhibition Gallery only is $8, children (6-14) $5.

Boscobel is located on Route 9D in Garrison For additional information about the Boscobel and the Exhibition Gallery call 265-3638, ext. 115 or visit the website www.boscobel.org.

14th Annual Turtle Walk & Summer Yoga on the Lawn at Boscobel

Did you know the Hudson River Valley is among the top five of river drainages in the world for turtle diversity? From the tiny, rare Bog Turtle to the powerful but reserved Snapper, our land and waters still crawl with twelve remarkably different kinds of native turtles.

Snapping turtles, the focus of the 14th Annual Turtle Walk on June 7, are very common in New York and will be featured live in the program at Boscobel hosted by members of Constitution Marsh Sanctuary's Audubon Society. From 7 to 9am, learn about how turtles have fit into life on earth for millions of years and now proper habitat is essential to their continued survival. We can all do our part to provide turtles with suitable areas to live. Join us for an educational and fun morning about these beautiful armored creatures! Pastries, donuts, juice, and coffee will be available at 7am, with the program starting promptly at 7:30.

A new program to Boscobel, Summer Yoga on the Lawn will take place on Monday evenings from June 16 to August 25 at 6-7:15pm. This is the perfect opportunity to fall in love with the outdoors all over again. Spectacular views entice the senses as you stretch and pose overlooking the Hudson River from the Front Lawn of Boscobel, the ideal setting to practice yoga and increase flexibility, endurance, strength, and wellbeing. Taught by Ellen Forman, a local instructor who has taught at the Garrison and Pace University, this class is catered to fit the needs of all levels, from beginners to experts. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own mats and water. For more information, visit www.boscobel.org or call 265-3638 ext. 115.

Boscobel is located on scenic Route 9D, in Garrison. From April through October, hours are from 9:30 am. to 5pm., the last tour at 4:15pm. The Museum and Gift Shop are open every day except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas. For more information, please visit www.boscobel.org.
