Garrison Art Center Presents Annual Fall Artists-On-Location
Art Auction
On Saturday, October 4, 2008, Garrison Art Center will host its Annual Fall Artists-on-Location Art Auction featuring more than 85
professional artists from the tri-state area. This semi-annual fundraiser, a signature event of the Art Center for 26 years, brings artists to the Hudson Valley
for a day of painting au pleine air at a location of their choice. The newly-created river and landscape paintings in various media are available for
purchase that afternoon under the auction tent in the "backyard" of the Art Center on Garrison's Landing.
Garrison Art Center's location, just 50 miles north of New York City, a short walk from Metro North's Hudson Line (Garrison Station) is
unique in its beauty, with the grandeur of West Point on the opposite shore and views north and south to well-known Hudson Highland mountains,
ridges and points of interest. Garrison Art Center is happy to have auctioneers George Lowry and his son Nicho Lowry from Swann Galleries in New
York City. The Auction is fast-paced and live-action entertainment ensuring a fun and rewarding afternoon for all. Proceeds from the auction benefit
Art Center programs and efforts at fostering an appreciation of the arts in our surrounding communities.
This fall the Auction invitation postcard and poster feature the work of long-standing auction artist Rick Thurston from upstate New York.
Adding to the spirit of the event, a hand-colored Auction poster signed by all participating artists will start the bidding at the Oct. 4 Live Auction. An
exhibition of signed posters from years past will be on display, with a few limited edition posters still available for purchase.
The Live Auction begins at 4pm, rain or shine, and ends at approximately 7pm. Come at 3pm to enjoy a wine and cheese reception, and view
the paintings up for auction. The concurrent Silent Auction in the galleries is open for bidding beginning at 3 pm on Saturday, October 4, and
closing October 12, at 5pm sharp. The Silent Auction exhibits previously-completed artwork by the same artists who participate in the Live Auction.
The status of the bidding may be checked and further bids placed by phone or in person between 10/4 and 10/12 at 5pm. The Silent and Live
Auctions are great opportunities for collectors and homeowners to purchase great art at great prices.
Garrison Art Center's gallery hours are noon-5pm seven days a week. Half of the purchase price of paintings is tax deductible. For
further information or to place a silent bid call GAC, 424-3960 and visit www.garrisonartcenter.org. Many of the participating artists can be viewed in
the website's Virtual Gallery.
Free parking for the event is available in the Metro North Parking Lot (parking passes are not required on the weekend). Walk across the train
tracks through the underground passage at the north end of the parking lot or take the trestle overhead at the main parking lot. Don't forget - allow
plenty of time for parking, paddle buying and viewing! Or come earlier and watch the artists who paint on the Landing.
Garrison Art Center is a not-for-profit educational and cultural organization serving the Hudson Valley for more than 40 years by fostering
creative ideas and an appreciation of the arts. It is supported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts. The Art Center's
primary source of support comes from its membership, programs and events and from a wide range of generous arts patrons.
Carinda Swann Named Executive Director of Garrison Art Center
Garrison Art Center is pleased to announce that artist Carinda Swann is leading the Art Center's educational programs, exhibitions and
wide-ranging community events. Carinda brings impressive credentials as an artist, designer, teacher and faculty member with significant administrative
experience to the position.
In recent years she worked as an art professor at Marist College and as a teaching artist at the Art Center. Previously, Carinda has served
as architectural designer and space planner for commercial builders, as head of design at an architectural firm and as artistic director of a
community theatre. She is also a former board member of Garrison Art Center and the co-chair of the Art Center's summer sculpture show,
CURRENT. Carinda was selected from a field of forty applicants which included a number of very fine local candidates.
Carinda succeeds Libby Turnock, who resigned as the Art Center's Director after fifteen years effective September 1, 2008. Libby oversaw
the development and growth of GAC's major events including the Artist-on-Location Auctions and the Fine Arts and Crafts Fairs. She also
expanded programs and services for youth and developed opportunities for professional and emerging artists. Libby significantly elevated the quality of
the exhibitions in the Art Center's two galleries and expanded class offerings to include all ages and media seven days a week. She also began a
new and productive relationship with the Philipstown Recreation Department.
Libby has been an active and vocal advocate for the Art Center not only within the local community, but statewide, bringing essential
funding necessary for artistic and fiscal growth. Libby was a founder of NY State Multi-Arts Centers Consortium (NYMAC) which has served GAC and
many art centers throughout the state.Under Libby's focused guidance Garrison Art Center grew from an operating budget of $125,000 to over
$400,000. The impact of its quality programming on individuals is immense with innumerable benefits to the community. GAC is deeply indebted to Libby
for the unparalleled commitment, dedication and vision she brought to Garrison Art Center.
Get Serious About Art at Garrison Art Center
Garrison Art Center (GAC) offers classes seven days a week, great Teaching Artists, and a non-competitive setting for adults, teens and kids
to explore their excitement about being an artist.
This Summer GAC accomplished renovations to its exterior and studios. This Fall new programs call for creative teenagers, amateurs and
professionals to come claim the Center as their own.
Young Artist Programming (age 15+) positions GAC as the place for creative teens to connect with art, and each other. It is important for
artistic youth to be supported as such, and GAC is committed to providing serious, college-level instruction to teens. Core classes are now offered such
as "Drawing From the Live Model" with Carinda Swann and "Figure Painting" with David Loeb. A Fall workshop with Andrea Eisenberg,
"Sculpting From the Live Model", anticipates a return of instruction in clay modeling techniques this winter. Also new are "Teen Pottery on the Wheel" with
Beth Bolgla (in the renovated ceramics studio), and "Silkscreen Techniques" with Carlos Uribe.
Plein Air Workshops place the excitement of GAC's Artist On Location (AOL) event into plein air instruction for adults & older teens.
Combined with the Fall AOL October 4, these new weekend workshops offer a great way to spend the Fall working outdoors. "Landscape Painting" with
Kevin Kearns, and "Drawing with Pastels in the Landscape" with Sheilah Rechtschafer, provide professional instruction in beautiful settings
including Garrison's Landing, Stonecrop Gardens, and local private gardens.
Explore Decorative Arts to create something unique for your home. Review in the Fall Class Schedule the "Decorative Painting
Techniques" workshop with Susan Minier, the "Mosaics" class with Tina Davenport, and "Watercolor Paper Marbling" with Christina DiMarco. Creative
Classes for Children by Jaanika Peerna and Barbara Smith Goia offer the youngest artists opportunities to learn the joy of art-making too!
Registration has begun, and space is limited, so review these classes and more in the Fall Class Schedule soon! To review GAC classes,
special events, and programs visit www.garrisonartcenter.org, or call 424-3960.
