Decend Into Madness At Canopus Club’s 8th Annual Haunted House
Eight years ago, when Putnam Valley Elementary school went on an austerity budget and could no longer afford its annual haunted house, seven-and four-year-old brothers, Kenny and Ricky Medina (of Canopus Country Club) asked their bar chairperson, Loretta Ferro to host a haunted house for the area children.
This is only the outside....
With a bit of hesitation, and a limited budget, Ferro gathered a few friends together and began decorating the clubhouse. And hence, Canopus’ first Haunted House was born (or should we say became un-dead?).
When in the beginning, the scare fest was sized to fit only a quarter of the building, it now encompasses the entire facility and spills out onto the surrounding land; while there were originally a handful of helpers, today there are at least 35 volunteers who travel from all over the country, just to join in the festivities and to give you a good scare! The original $2.00 donation/admission has been upped to $7.00, and is solely used for expenses. Kenny and Ricky, along with their friends, remain a part of the tradition they began, as ghosts and goblins.
Each year the Putnam Valley and Lake Peekskill community and friends have helped the growth of this event, which brings visitors from all over the tri-state area. Though a family oriented activity, children too young to Decend into Madness, (8 and under) should probably stay with the sitter...
To relieve you from any boredom while waiting to get in, this year, along the donation/admission line, you will have the opportunity to purchase treats from Aunt Betty’s Kitchen (hot dog truck), have your cards or palm read by Sister Sally, purchase gifts and have your cards read by Doorway to Enchantment, and enjoy face painting or temporary tattoos by Eileen & Jaime Kirz.
This event runs Friday and Saturday nights, thru October 30, from 7:30 pm to 11 pm. Canopus Country Club is located off Kramers Pond Road, Putnam Valley. The cash bar will be open, and Decend into Madness T-shirts will be available for purchase. As usual, the $7.00 admission/donation goes to the sole purpose of helping to make next years happening to continue to be the biggest, the best and the scariest haunted house in the area!
