After winning two silver medals in 1998 at the United States National Skating Championships Competition in Fresno, California, 11-year-old Kimberly Mazzuca brought home two gold medals from the 1999 Nationals in Syracuse, NY on July 28. She won first place in inline freestyle singles and first place in inline creative solo dance.
Mazzuca practices five days a week, almost four hours a day, under coach Carl Henderson. She attends the Southern Maryland Christian Academy.
Her coach was presented two John Wintz awards for coaching a gold medal-winner in two national events. The award is given to the coach for permanent display in the rink. It is given in memory of John Wintz, the founder of the first artistic skating plate and wheels called "sure grip."
Mazzuca was also interviewed after winning her medals by USA Roller Skating magazine.
Kimberly’s grandfather is Richard Mazzuca of Cold Spring.
