MediaOne of New York, along with A&E Network, is sponsoring an essay contest that could win students from area schools great cash prizes. The project is called A&E Network’s "Biography of the Year Essay Contest." To participate in the writing contest, students must write an original essay, supporting their choice of any famous person they believe should be selected for "Biography of the Year."
There are two categories for participating students, 5th through 8th grade and 9th through 12th grade. Two grand-prize winners and two first-prize winners will be selected from each group. Grand -prize winners will receive a $1,000 savings bond; their teachers will receive $500 in cash and the school will receive an A&E video library. First place winners will receive a $750 savings bond; their teachers will win $250 in cash and their school will receive an A&E video library.
In addition to the national contest, MediaOne will be holding its own separate, local writing competition. In that contest, two winners will be selected and each will receive $250 in cash, plus gifts provided by A&E Network. Entries, which must include name, address, phone, school, school address, school phone, teacher’s name and grade, should be mailed to: Public Affairs MediaOne 1 Van Cortlandt Avenue Ossining, NY 10562. All entries must be postmarked by November 1, 1999. MediaOne will notify local winners no later than December 1, 1999. In addition, all entries into the MediaOne of New York "Biography of the Year Essay Contest" will automatically be sent to the national A&E Essay contest and will be judged separately.
