OBITUARY
Eugene F. Whelan

Eugene F. Whelan, age 76, of Cold Spring, NY, died peacefully on November 29, 2000.

He was born on March 10, 1924 in East Orange, NJ to Adelaide Voorhees and Eugene F. Whalen, Sr.

Mr. Whelan served as a Sergeant in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII. He graduated from Amherst College in 1947 and worked for 22 years for Sullivan, Stauffer, Colwell and Bayles Advertising Agency, leaving as Senior Vice President of the Creative Department to form his own business. He retired in 1988 as Chairman of the Board of Product Resources International, a new-product development company. Mr. Whalen lived in New York City from 1947 until 1993, when he and his wife moved to Cold Spring. He was active in volunteer work all his life. In New York City, as President of the West 99th Street Block Association, he organized and participated in efforts to clean the street. He was active in various political campaigns, and volunteered at numerous organizations. After moving to Cold Spring, he volunteered at the Astor Head Start in Beacon and the Cortlandt Nursing Home. He attended Our Lady of Loretto Church. He lived in the Village of Cold Spring until he entered the Fishkill Health Related Facility in Beacon.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (nee Stephens); daughters Wendy Petrullo and husband John of Sherman Oaks, CA; Jane Sullivan and husband James of Briarcliff Manor; Elisabeth Whelan of New York; son Eugene F. Whelan III of Portland, OR; granddaughter Kathleen Sullivan; sisters Patricia Brokaw of Iowa City and Mary Jane Woram of Dallas; and sister-in-law Patricia Whalen. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Our Lady of Loretto Church, Cold Spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Retirement Fund of Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, Graymoor, 41 Old Highland Turnpike, Garrison, NY 10524.
