Garrison Firm Chosen By Clermont State Historic Site
The architectural firm of Hudson Design has been selected to design and produce construction documents for the renovation of Clermont Cottage at the Clermont State Historic Site in Columbia County, New York. The Cottage will house the Museum’s Administrative and Educator’s Offices, a Research Library maintained by the Friends of Clermont, and Reception Facilities.
The 3,300 sq. ft. cottage was built in 1820 as the head gardener’s residence, adjacent to the Livingston mansion, the centerpiece of the Historic Site. The original estate of 13,000 acres was the second largest private landholding in colonial New York, established in 1728. Since then, seven generations of Livingstons have left their imprint on the property and buildings. As Clermont Cottage has borne abuse and neglect in its’ recent history, it requires substantial exterior and interior rehabilitation, upgrades on all the plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems, and the creation of handicapped access.
Located in Garrison, Hudson Design was founded by Architect James M. Copeland in 1986 to offer comprehensive services in Architecture, Interior Design, and Planning. Past Historic Preservation and Renovation projects include projects at Saratoga Springs State Park, specifically, the rehabilitation at The Little Theater, and creating state-of-the-art Justice Chambers within the Lincoln Baths Building. Recently, an historic boarding school estate perched above the Hudson River shore was renovated to house the Hastings Center’s international headquarters. This non-profit bio-medical ethics organization produces a renowned quarterly publication, hosts visiting scholars and global conferences, and maintains all its Administrative/Editorial Offices and extensive Research Library at this site. Hudson Design is skilled at such challenging restoration projects. The Clermont Cottage at Clermont State Historic Site will be completed in 2002.
