Remove Your Blinkers
Editor,

In response to Jack Bernhard’s letter affecting surprise that a Palestinian might be called heroic who is willing to blow himself up as the only effective means to convince Israelis that they cannot get away with invading and persecuting his people without some cost to themselves; I would suggest that it is not Bernhard’s glasses that need changing as he surmises, but his blinkers that need to be removed! Too narrow a focus on Zionism confirms it as racism!

It would seem he believes that "the people who now call themselves ‘Palestinians’" as he puts it (never mind it may be because they and their ancestors lived there) are not worthy of the same consideration as "the chosen people," the most dangerous idea in history, as the Jews should have learned when the Nazis claimed "Gott mit uns!" (God with us!.) But surely crass colonialism should be a thing of the past, unless we are condemned to endlessly repeat history, and assuming our planet can take it, radioactively speaking!

Bernhard asks if I was alive in 1948 when Israel was created, yes, and we must add, without asking the Palestinians and without Israel living up to the 50-50 partition mandate but rather getting away with ever-shrinking "reservations," treating them like we treated Native Americans and evermore like the blacks we enslaved; or worse!

Fortunately there are Israeli scholars like Israel Shahak (whose books are hard to get in this country and almost impossible to get in Israel) and many Israeli and American Jews who transcend Zionist racism and the genocidal attitude toward non-Jews preached in the Torah and Talmud (look up Amalekites!), and who may through meditation experience our Oneness in God using such means as the Kabbalah (which resembles Kundalini Yoga) or any such focus on the Spirit! Amen! So Be It!
