Flag Print Receives High Bid At Manitoga Auction

A 25-year-old American flag print was the high point of the auction at the annual benefit of Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center on Sunday, September 16.

The tragic attacks of September 11 weighed heavily on people’s minds, and the Manitoga board had given much thought to whether or not to hold the event. "One of the reasons we went ahead was that life must go on, and American culture can be the first casualty," said David McAlpin, president of the board. "We said, in some very small way, if we had blinked on this, then the terrorists would have succeeded." A portion of the proceeds was earmarked to aid the families of victims at the World Trade Center.

Designed by Massimo Vignelli, one of Manitoga’s 2001 Russel Wright Award recipients, the flag print incorporated clippings from foreign language newspapers. It was auctioned off for $3,750, twice the amount it had been expected to go for. The purchaser was Deborah McManus of Garrison.

Honorees Massimo and his wife Lella Vignelli have made significant contributions to virtually every design field. Familiar to many are the designs of the New York subway map, Heller tableware and the Bloomingdale’s lower case "b" logo.

William T. Golden was honored to reflect the environmental side of Russel Wright’s legacy. He is the guiding spirit behind research, education and conservation in the Black Rock Forest in Cornwall. He is best know for creating the office of Science Advisor to the White House and serving U.S. Presidents from Harry Truman on.

The Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution received this year’s third Russel Wright Award which was accepted by museum director Paul Thompson. The museum was recognized for broad leadership in design. Their exhibition, "Russel Wright: Creating American Lifestyle", opening November 20, will feature material never before made public.

More than 200 people attended from the local community and the New York region. The gross proceeds reached approximately $100,000—an all time record. Co-Chairs of the event were Andrew Capitman and Margaret Doyle. The auctioneer was David Redden, Vice Chairman of Sotheby’s. The event coordinator was Vivian Linares.

Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center, where the event was held, is the home and 75-acre woodland garden of pre-eminent 20th century designer Russel Wright, located on Rt. 9D, south of the intersection of Rts. 9D and 301, Garrison.
