American Red Cross Launches Unprecedented New Gift Program For Families Affected by Recent Terrorist Attacks
A new Gift Program has been established by the American Red Cross to help families of those who were in and at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon meet their immediate financial obligations to lessen the burden during these most difficult early weeks and months.
With more than 100 years of disaster relief experience, the American Red Cross has learned what people need immediately following a disaster. What happened in our nation on the morning of September 11 was unlike anything the Red Cross has ever responded to. As a result, the American Red Cross has initiated its largest disaster relief operation on American soil, and developed unprecedented programs to help families cope with the catastrophic events of last Tuesday.
Bound in its mission to meet the unique and emerging needs caused by these disasters, the Red Cross has implemented a variety of new programs to help New Yorkers, as well as the people impacted by the events of September 11, in Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more than 60 nations of the world. The program will place funds in the hands of the families quickly and efficiently, to help pay for:
· Monthly living expenses such as food, clothing, utilities and transportation
· Mortgage and rent payments
· Funeral and related expenses
· Other time sensitive and uncovered expenses
The American Red Cross is coordinating the effort to provide these financial gifts with employers of the World Trade Center. Anyone with a family member who was in or at the World Trade Center or the Pentagon and who is missing or deceased is urged to take advantage of the new Red Cross Gift Program. Families of firefighters, police officers and other emergency workers who were lost or are missing in the rescue are also eligible for Red Cross assistance. Families will meet one-on-one with a Red Cross caseworker to help determine short-term financial needs.
Checks will be sent the next business day to the family. Contributions can be made to the American Red Cross by calling 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Internet users can make a secure online credit card contribution by visiting www.nyredcross.org. Contributions may also be sent to your local Putnam County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Greater New York, 3 Gannett Place, Carmel, NY 10512.
