Response With Violence Does Not Stop The Cycle

Dear Editor;

The catastrophes at the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and the woods of Pennsylvania have stunned us all. We grieve for the families and friends of those dead and missing at the sites - many of whom died committing acts of breathtaking bravery.

In the long days to come, we will witness and participate in our country’s efforts to respond in its "new kind of war" against Terrorism. We of the Buddhist faith believe that response of violence to violence does not stop the cycle, but only escalates it. We are hopeful that our nation’s efforts include awareness of this truth. Punishment of the guilty must not be accompanied by violent assault on the innocent.

In addition, we are concerned about domestic issues. It is crucial that in our fear and anger we not retaliate against our brother and sister Americans who happen to be Arabic and Islamic. Those knowledgeable about Islam know that it is a faith opposed to violence. It is our hope that all who read this will be especially kind to their Arab brothers, and sisters - offering support and protection where appropriate.

The tragedy of 9/11 is dark enough without our adding to it an era of new persecution and scapegoating. Our group stands ready to provide support to Arab families in our community who are fearful of suffering persecution.

Sincerely,

Barbara Green Lotus Bloom Sangha

W. Chang, Secretary
