Haldane Third Grade Scientists
Haldane third grade scientists began the school year with the Science 21 unit investigating what a scientist does. This program is activity-based and not textbookbased since research has shown that science is best learned through active participation, engaging students in inquiry-based, hands - on experiences.
For their first experiment the student scientists mixed two liquids to form a solid. They then used their senses to record their observations about the mystery substance they created. The students worked cooperatively to study the substance and shared their results with the rest of the class.
One of the books that the students read while exploring this unit is "What is a Scientist" by Barbara Lehn. The children learn that a scientist is a person who asks questions from their senses, notices details, draws, writes measures and sorts, tests predictions, experiments, thinks logically, keeps trying and has fun.
