Training Flights Are Burden To Bear
To The Editor:
Penny Millar of Cold Spring writes (Letters, Oct. 31) that she is upset that low-flying military aircraft recently disturbed a quiet autumn idyll in her backyard. She seems put out that the Department of Defense did not notify her of the flights in advance, or at least that she was not made aware of the notices they said they ran in the local media. Well, in the interest of keeping Ms. Millar fully informed, here’s a related item that’s been in all the papers but may too have escaped her attention: We’re at war!
So if the occasional military training flight startles us here at home, that may just be a burden we have to bear, with the good grace and - on occasion - the stoicism that generations of Americans before us have shown in wartime. After all, the pilots who train today over the Hudson may soon be disquieting the Taliban who, in response, will be firing off things that have to be taken a lot more seriously than Ms. Millar’s letter to the editor.
