Instead of gobbling up treats just for themselves on Halloween, Putnam Valley Elementary School students gave away treats to help the world’s children by participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Mrs. Janet Wilson’s third grade class led the effort, in which students made donation boxes, posters and thank you notes, and held drives outside the school cafeteria, collecting spare snack money and change for donations.
"This fits in with our study of geography, plus building community and awareness of other cultures," explained Mrs. Wilson. "It also teaches Putnam Valley kids to help others, and fosters community involvement." The students learned what other children in different parts of the world need in terms of education, nutrition, health care and sanitation, in conjunction with their reading, social studies, and science lessons, and then tabulated the donations in a math assignment. While working across the students’ curriculum with real-life assignments, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a fun and engaging way to involve kids in a rewarding community service program.
