Sheriff Smith Completes Sheriff’s Institute Session

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith completed participation in the 82nd Session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) held in Longmont, Colorado April 14-26th. Sheriff Smith was awarded his degree of completion from Mr. Larry Solomon, Deputy Director, National Institute of Corrections, and Mr. Fred G. Wilson, Director of Training, NSA.

The National Sheriffs’ Institute is the only national executive development program designed for Sheriffs. Sheriff Smith was joined by 29 other Sheriffs from across the country to address the pressing issues faced by sheriffs. During the NSI 82nd session Sheriff Smith and the other sheriffs discussed the numerous ways to respond to emerging and continuing issues in criminal justice and public safety such as, homeland security, school violence, court security, drugs, and community relations in the current context of increased awareness for public safety.

Fred G. Wilson, NSA Director of Training, said, "Sheriff Smith is a tremendous credit to County and he represents all of the sheriffs of our Nation well. It is an honor to have Sheriff Smith join the over 3,000 graduates of the NSI since 1970".

The National Institute of Corrections is a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons. The NIC, has been a long-time sponsor of the NSI and is the premier national resource for jail operations, design and programming.
