Oakwood School Presents The Importance Of Being Earnest
Oakwood Friends School proudly presents The Importance of Being Earnest on Thursday, May 9th through Saturday, May 11 at 8pm in the school’s Lane Auditorium.
This comedy written by Oscar Wilde is set in 1905 London and is a satire on upper class British society of the time. Jack Worthing, who uses the alias "Ernest" to cover his escapades while visiting London, is in love with Gwendolyn Fairfax, the cousin of his friend Algernon Moncrieff. Algernon, who has invented an invalid friend named Bunbury, to whose bedside he can rush whenever he needs to escape an unwanted social obligation, is intrigued to learn that Jack has a pretty young ward, Cecily Cardew, at his house in the country.
Though Gwendolyn accepts Jack’s proposal, her mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell, withholds her consent when she learns that her prospective son-in-law was found abandoned as a baby in a handbag at Victoria Station. Meanwhile, Algernon, posing as "Ernest", Jack’s fictitious brother, bluffs his way into his friend’s country estates where he and Cecily fall in love. Jack, however, refuses to permit the match until Lady Bracknell allows him to marry Gwendolyn. The resulting impasse is resolved only when Cecily’s governess, Miss Prism, makes a remarkable confession.
While the play is free, donations are accepted at the door. The Oakwood Friends School is located at 22 Spackenkill Road in Poughkeepsie. For additional information, please call Oakwood Friends School at (845) 462-4200.
