Spring Soccer Kicks Off 2002 Season At Haldane High
by Chris Anderson

The Haldane Varsity Girls Soccer team is at it again, making another run for sectionals. Two years ago, the girls took the Sectional Class D title, and last year they returned to the tournament, only to lose in the finals. The girls are off to a decent start this year under 5th year Coach Julie Marchinkoski, as well as Ms. Cancro. They have a 3-5 record, with big wins against Beacon, Poughkeepsie, and Pawling. The girls are guided under the great leadership of captains Amanda Jamin, the team’s only senior, junior Alexis Lyons, and Casey Kohut. Other members of the team include juniors Catie Owens, and Jenai Downer; Sophomores Kaitlin Sullivan, Rebecca Crimmins, Grisel Cordero, Nicole Giachinta, Suzette Marrero, Julia Ring, and Rebecca Lyons; and Freshmen Julia Dimeo, Chloe Rice, Margie Tomann, Sarah Owens, Dara Lijoi, and Allison Spinelli. Cordero has really stepped up this year and filled in at goalie for injured Jenny Lee Goodrich. These girls have a young team with a lot of talent and heart, qualities that have always been a part of girl’s soccer here at Haldane. They are very intense on the field and give one hundred percent in every game.

Last week the girls had two games. First up was Pawling, a team that the girls had already beat previously in the season with a score of 5-2. This time the outcome was not the same, the girls were defeated 5-1. Kaitlin Sullivan was the player with the only score for Haldane. Next was Dover, a tight and down to the wire match that went into overtime. Overtime consists of two 10 minute periods, and in those 2 periods, Dover went on to score two goals to make it 3-1, after a long 1-1 tie all game. Kaitlin Sullivan had the goal that kept her team in the game.

The girl’s next game is this Thursday. Despite the start of this year’s season, the girls are hoping to get on top of their game and come out as the dominant team at sectionals. Coach Marchinkoski and Coach Cancro have done a great job guiding their team through the season as of now, and their leadership and knowledge will help the girls in capturing another sectional championship.
