Putnam Valley Government Responds To Residents, As No Parking Signs Are Removed and Vendor Contracts Withheld
by Edward Paul Greiff

The Putnam Valley Town Board meeting and public hearing of July 17th had a common denominator running through it, as expressed by Supervisor Santos and the Town Council: "The people elect us and pay us our salary, we are here to serve their needs."

That they did as they heard arguments from the public as to why ‘No Parking’ signs recently put up on roads around the High School should be removed because of the hardships imposed on residents in the area, especially in the winter time when many of them park on the road. One recommendation, which the Board intends to follow through on, is that during a large High School event, the Sheriff’s Department be notified and temporary no parking indicators be posted at the appropriate locations.

Another instance was presented by Roaring Brook resident Fridel Landau-Muller who presented a petition with over one hundred signatures protesting the awarding of a contract to Kinney Landscaping without getting input from the people who live in the Roaring Brook community. The Kinney contract was put on hold until the Board can investigate why local residents are not allowed to attend Roaring Brook Lake Association management meetings where decisions are made about Roaring Brook without input from residents of the community. Landau-Muller was told that the meetings are closed sessions and that the public was not invited.

The Volunteer Ambulance Corps reported that so far this month, they have responded to fifty calls and they expect the count to go over ninety for the month of July. Unfortunately, their activity is increasing to about three calls a day, with more people on the road and the high humidity and temperatures.

County Legislator Sam Oliverio reported that the County has potassium iodide pills (also referred to as KI and SSKI) available for the public, but that they were going to move slowly and cautiously before handing them out to the public.

Supervisor Santos commented, "What am I supposed to do — wear a Geiger counter on my lapel so I know when to take the pill? Besides, if you take the wrong amount it can kill you."

According to several handbooks on nursing the dosage varies from 50mg to 500mg depending on factors such as age, condition and so on. Is there one universal pill that will prevent radiation poisoning?

There are many unanswered questions when it comes to the use of the potassium iodide pill. The medical community currently uses this pill in thyroid related procedures. According to Blanchard & Loeb’s "Nurse’s Drug Handbook 2003," "Potassium iodide inhibits the release of thyroid hormones into the circulation, thus alleviating symptoms caused by excessive thyroid hormone stimulation. Potassium iodide also blocks thyroidal uptake of radioactive iodine isotopes that are released as a result of radiation exposure."

This reporter has been unable to discern whether potassium iodide pills would have helped reduce the radiation sickness and death that followed the 1986 Chernobyl, Ukraine nuclear power station accident.

The Town of Putnam Valley is continuing with its enforcement of the Unsafe Building Law Chapter 66. Mr. Lieto’s house at 34 Homebrook Road is scheduled for demolition during the month of August Mr. Lieto was not present at the meeting.

Another home, Mr. Cornu’s at 345 Oscawana Lake Road, is scheduled to have unsafe building proceedings commenced this month, and a public hearing will be scheduled as soon as possible. Mr. Cornu was present and objected vehemently to the charges and stormed out of the meeting room.

Town attorney David Wright presented an architectural rendering of what the proposed River Walk Park at Oregon Corners and Oscawana Lake Road will look like. He held up an engraved brick and said it had been suggested that perhaps people would like to purchase a brick with their name engraved on it, to be permanently installed in the Riverwalk Park.

Legislator Vinnie Tamagna presented an open invitation to Putnam Valley to join in the New York State American Garden Project remembering 9-11, as a community project. The Town would decide the site of the garden. Carmelo Santos indicated that the Town would participate.
