Reader Laments Betrayal of Democracy
Letter to the Editor:

As indicated in newspaper articles etc., it seems the politicians in Putnam are pursuing their traditional game of pendulum pushing -while waiting for the next handout from other government sources.

As an excuse not to fund needed sewer projects such as those in Putnam Lake, Brewster, Peach Lake and others, despite the $3 million remaining from the last handout (which accumulated interest has grown to $40 million), our politicians claim we must either sacrifice needed sewer or environmental projects.

In the meantime, our traditional corrupt policy of sparing the rich and the large corporations from paying their fair share of taxes to assure large political and/or personal pay-offs from these same sourcess continues quietly, aided by a largely paid-off or owned press.

Fortunately, at least during the presidential campaign, democratic candidates are pledging to end, or at least to reduce, this tradi-tional source of the corruption of democracy.

It is hard to believe that the public will continue to fail to wake up to this betrayal of democracy, especially when made more evident by the current Bush-whacking of the budget and fair taxation on the federal level, needed to take care of the poor, the sick and the aged.

In view of the global dimensions of our increasing neglect of humanity and environmental degradation to the point of destruction, it seems a Spenglerian decline of the West may mushroom into a global collapse of higher forms of life, assuming we may still be considered higher.

At least enough hope remains for me to bother writing this letter.
