Oliverio Promises Putnam Valley Senior Center Will Open
Town Day plans updated and detailed
by Edward Paul Greiff

The Senior Center in Putnam Valley stands ready to open, pending resolution of staffing issues

At the May 18th Putnam Valley Town Board meeting Councilman Dan Ricci stood in for Town Supervisor Carmelo Santos who was on vacation in Florida visiting his mother and family and awaiting the birth of a new grandchild. It appears that Mr. Santos will be spending more time in Florida after the new year as he has announced that he would not be running for reelection this year. He will be moving to Florida to spend more time with his family and his new grandchild.

While Dan Ricci was acting supervisor for the meeting, Putnam Valley’s County Legislator Sam Oliverio dominated the meeting discussing various issues facing the town and how they can be addressed at the county level. He first spoke about Putnam Valley’s Senior Center which appears to be finished but will not open because "There are no funds" to staff the facility according to County Executive Bob Bondi.

With senior citizen Virginia Smith sitting in the audience, Legislator Oliverio looked her in the eye and said, "The executive branch is not moving fast enough for us and Mrs. Smith, I told you we will have the Senior Center open by June and we will have that open by June. And that’s the work of the legislature."

Mr. Oliverio explained that all nine members of the County Legislature are a little concerned about what they keep hearing about the Senior Center, that the building is almost ready to be occupied but we don’t have the personnel to staff it. He added, "The senior center is scheduled to be discussed by personnel, financial and Executive Bondi this week and the legislature will find out exactly what it will cost to open the building. The legislature will then requisition the necessary funds. Under their Charter they have the power to do that said Mr. Oliverio.

The Legislature will also make sure money is allocated to hire the two new sheriff deputies for which it was said there is no money. "The health and safety of our citizens comes first," said Mr. Oliverio.

On a more pleasant note Legislator Oliverio presented two Proclamations to the Rotary Club of America. The Proclamations were from the County Executive Bob Bondi and the County Legislature in recognition of the Rotary’s 100th Birthday and Putnam Valley’s Rotary 35th anniversary.

Mr. Oliverio said, "The Rotary just celebrated its 100th birthday, having been founded in 1905 in Chicago by a group of professional leaders working together to provide various community and international service needs. This group has gone on to provide amazing community support and service."

To celebrate the Rotary birthday, the Putnam Valley Rotary restored the Grist Mill on Mill Pond Road.

Mr. Oliverio also took a moment to congratulate Marie Zarcone for winning a seat on the Putnam Valley School Board, he said, "Your tenacity has always been out front and your presence on the school board will bring a breath of fresh air."

Sam Oliverio updated residents with news regarding Peekskill Hollow road, "There will be a major informational meeting the end of September beginning of October to review the finale schematics for the reconstruction of the road and the bridge at Oregon Corners.

Bob Tendy provided a Town Day update for the yearly event scheduled for Saturday July 23rd at the Town Park. Town Day will start at 8 am with a tag sale. From 2 pm to 3 pm there will be a parade starting at Putnam Valley High School and ending at the Library by Morrisey Drive.

Although parking will be scattered around town there will be continuous bus runs constantly picking people up and dropping them off.

The actual event starts at 3 pm with a variety of games for the kids. The first 300 families arriving will receive a free gift. Around 9 pm they will be having a spectacular fireworks display second only to NYC’s 4th of July celebration.

A host of local people will be providing every conceivable type of food imaginable.

Putnam Valley Arts will be providing the entertainment and bands all day long. The Road Knights and their vintage cars will be there as well as the motorcycle club.

For those who can’t wait until then, Lake Peekskill will be holding their popular Open Mic Night on Saturday, June 4th. Between 7 and 10 pm, anyone who shows up at the Community Center will be able to display their talents to one and all. All the organizers are asking is that the performers sign in. The last time Lake Peekskill played host to the Open Mic Night, it was an overwhelming success, so get there early to get a good seat.
