PVHS Team Returning to Mahopac Relay for Life

On the weekend of June 4th and 5th a group of Putnam Valley students, teachers and parents will participate in the 7th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life, held at Mahopac High School. Relays for Life are held each year across the country in order to raise funds to fight cancer. Even more importantly, the Relays encourage and celebrate support for cancer survivors, as well as remembrance of loved ones who have lost their lives to the disease.

The Mahopac Relay is held on the athletic fields and track at Mahopac High, with "teams" from various schools and community groups dotting the grass. The group from PV is looking for a large tent for this event. Anyone with a large tent to lend, or funds to donate towards a tent rental, can contact Pam Adamovich at 845-526-7847 or email padamovich@pvcsd.org or lcefaloni@pvcsd.org.

While the entire day is filled with activity, one of the most meaningful events is the evening lighting of the luminaries, white paper bags filled with sand and small candles, which are placed around the track to form a huge circle of light and hope. Each bag is inscribed with the name of a lost loved one or a survivor. Another emotional moment is the Survivors’ Lap, during which all of the cancer survivors, dressed in bright purple t-shirts, walk through a purple and white balloon arch to walk a lap around the track.

Linda Cefaloni, who teaches math at PVHS and is the advisor for the Make a Difference Club, is the team leader. Students from both the Putnam Valley Middle School and Putnam Valley High School, primarily from the Make a Difference Club and the National Junior Honor Society, are scheduled to walk in shifts all day long and well into the night.

Over the past six years, the Mahopac High School Relay for Life has earned well over $1 million in donations for cancer support and research. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so. Checks made out to the American Cancer Society can be dropped off at the PVHS Office, attn: Linda Cefaloni.

Mrs. Cefaloni remarks, "Everyone’s life has been touched in some way by cancer. This is a huge and inspiring community effort to do something about cancer in a positive and meaningful way. The students, staff and parents who participate, learn first hand about teamwork and the value of community service, and they always have a great time. It is our goal to have an even bigger group, a bigger tent, and a bigger fundraising total then ever before when we gather on June 4th and 5th for the next Relay for Life. We hope that everyone in the Putnam Valley community will consider joining us."
