Memorial Day Observance Schedule Announced in Philipstown
by Phil Schatzle, Commander,VFW
The Memorial Day Committee of Philipstown has announced the schedule for the traditional Memorial Day Parade to be held on Monday, May 30, 2005. The parade will start promptly at 9 am at the foot of Main Street, Cold Spring. Besides the American Legion members and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, approximately twenty groups have been invited to participate, including the Haldane band under the leadership of Ms. Debbie Contini.
All Philipstown veterans, residents, their families and friends are invited to participate in the parade either by marching or gathering along the parade route for the special Memorial Services at our local monuments and cemeteries. The Memorial Day Parade is a wonderful opportunity for all members of the Philipstown Community to honor the service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country in all the wars this great nation has participated in. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away, especially our veterans. In addition we should take time to pray and reflect upon the sacrifices that our young men and women are making in Iraq, Afhganistan, and other parts of the world. On Memorial Day all residents are encouraged to display their American flags on this solemn day.
Grand Marshall for the parade this year will be Angelo Percacciolo,World War II Veteran. Assistant Grand Marshal will be John Turco, WWII and Korea. Both of these veterans have been loyal members of the American Legion and VFW for the past 6o years. Our Master of Ceremonies for Memorial Day, Parge Sgro also has been an active member of the VFW and American Legion.
Guest speaker for the Memorial Day Service will be the Honorable Robert Patterson of Cold Spring. Mr. Patterson is currently a Federal District Judge in the Southern District of New York. He entered the United States Army Air Corps one month after Pearl Harbor. His distinguished military career was spent as a Navigator for B-24s (Liberators), flying 45 missions over Germany and France. In addition to his judicial duties he is practicing law, nvolved in many volunteer organizations, and finally relaxing on his farm in Cold Spring on weekends. We are looking forward to his Address on Memorial Day.
In preparation for Memorial Day Ceremonies, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars members will place approximately 1,000 American flags on the graves of deceased veterans. We would appreciate anyone in Philipstown who is aware of a veteran who has passed away since our last Memorial Day and is buried in Cold Spring or some other area, please notify Phil Schatzle at 845-265-2506.
On Sunday May 29th there will be a special Memorial Service at the Parrott Gun at the waterfront in the village of Cold Spring. This service will honor veterans of all services lost at sea. All members of the community are invited.
One final note: As usual, all Memorial Day activities will be held rain or shine.
