Calls for Working Together at GUFS
To the Editor:
I feel compelled to correct the record regarding an exchange between the current Garrison Board President and myself that was reported in your May 18th edition.
Mr. Freilich raised the Special Education tuition issue when he attempted to incorrectly compare the Highland Falls estimated Special Ed NonResident Tuition (NRT) of $30,000, to what he claimed was Haldane’s Special Ed NRT of $14,000, for the same category of students. The Haldane estimated NRT is $34,000 for this category of Special Ed student, however the Garrison and Haldane Districts have settled on a negotiated tuition rate of approximately $14,000, and I was attempting to correct the inaccuracy. I never questioned the quality of Special Education services provided by Haldane to Garrison students. Mr. Freilich’s public presumption about my comments was unfortunate.
We need to move forward with a positive approach that respects our educational and community partners, deals with them equitably, and allows us to work together for common goals. This needs to begin now.
