Says Oppose Indian Point Relicensing Now
To the Editor:
If Entergy - the owner of the nuclear power plants at Indian Point - were to request approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a new plant so close to the nation’s largest population and financial center, they would not be approved. Now, with the two plants in Buchanan aging and problematic for a number of reasons, should the NRC extend their licenses to years 2033 and 2035? Entergy has reserved a place (without naming the plant) in the license reviewing schedule for July of this year. The NRC, although charged with protecting our health and safety, has ignored the many dangerous issues of these plants.
Before Indian Point comes up for review, our Township can join Westchester, Rockland and Ulster Counties and many municipal boards in signing a resolution opposing the relicensing of Indian Point nuclear plants. We must take action to protect ourselves now and in the future.
