CS Village Should Take More Care for Safety
Dear Editor,
As you reported last week, on May 11th a tractor-trailer truck carrying chlorine, sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide hit and uprooted a tree on Fair Street, which ripped the power lines from two houses and damaged a parked car. Fortunately, the toxic chemicals were not spilled.
No summons was issued to the driver, and the police say he was legal. I was told that there is no restriction on transporting these hazardous chemicals through the middle of our village. And that there is no restriction on the size of trucks that can use Fair Street. The police say he "misjudged" the height of the tree. Although in the police report it says "he heard a bang and then noticed he had struck a tree limb." In any case, either the truck was too high or the tree was too low. Our safety shouldn’t depend on estimates of clearance made by drivers on the spot. If the village allows huge trucks carrying poisons to rumble down our streets, it should keep the trees out of their way.
