Haldane Track Keeps Running
by Jay Neville

This past month has been a busy one for the track team at Haldane. The month has been filled with numerous meets for the team.

On April 30th the girl’s team participated in the Croton Relays. Highlights of the meet were the 1600 meter team race, run by Margie Tomann, Miranda Ward, and Jessica Neville, which placed first. Mia Szkolnicki, Felicia Gagnon, Katie McConville, and Faye Rice ran a great Sprint Medley Relay (200m-200m-400m-800m) for a second place finish.

Next was the League (IV-A) Championship Meet for the team. For the boys, Haldane found themselves at a disadvantage against the much larger and older Pawling and Croton teams and were even further disadvantaged by missing several strong athletes due to injury (Matt Marchese and Noah Gallagher). Senior Kostas Symiriotis did well for the team in the 100m dash, the long, jump, and high jump and thus achieved All-League Honorable Mention in three of the four events he competed in.

The girls team faired better than the boys placing second, just behind Pawling. Haldane’s female athletes earned All-League status (first place) in six events and Honorable Mention in another seven events (four second places and three third places). Stand out athletes for Haldane were Alice Delmonte (100m, 200m, 4x100m), Neville (800m and 1500m), McConville (long and triple Jump, 400m, 4x400m), Szkolnicki (4x100m and long jump), Ward (300m and 4x800m), Tomann (4x800m), Faye Rice (4x800m), Jana Barcavage and Emily Marsh (4x100m) and Chloe Rice (4x400m and 400m hurdles).

On May 14th the team took part in the Somers Lions Club Invitational. On the boys side Mike DiMeo placed third in the 100m and the discus, Ethan Lakota placed 3rd in the 400m hurdles and Marchese placed second in the 800m. For the girls McConville placed second in the 400m and fourth in the Triple Jump while Neville placed third in the1500m setting a new school record in the event.

The team is looking forward to the sectional championship on Friday the 20th at Hendrick Hudson High School. After Sectionals it will be on to state qualifiers the following week. The team will continue to run hard and hope for continued success and possibly additional records to be broken.
