Chambers Notes
Brightening The January Blues
by Jonathan Kruk
Now is the winter of our business discontent Traditionally, the cold weather thins out crowds and shops shutter. But a brisk walk on this warm weekend revealed another story. Diners thronged local restaurants. I couldn’t even see Jeff at the Foundry Cafe, he was so deep "in the weeds.. Friday evening music at Cathryn’s drew lots of locals and visitors. Plus, I noted others following my lead getting manicures at True Nails. Typically, shops thin out during the cold months. This year, new and reinvented businesses incubate rather than hibernate. A new French Restaurant will open in early Spring on Main and Fair Streets. There’s stirrings in Killian’s-Uptown-Stooges, and across the street at the old Cold Spring Cafe. Other businesses look to get established in Cold Spring and your property values are up this winter. What would Shakespeare say?
There’s substantial sales going on. Check out clothes , at St. Claire’s, Staley-Gretzinger and Hudson Valley Outfitters. Bittersweet is the sale at Sarsaparillas. Laura Cattuti will after seventeen years here, abandon us for the rainy glories of the Pacific Northwest. Her irrepressible smiles are irreplaceable. But, those seeking the children’s birthday gifts unique to Sarsaparillas will now find them in the new children’s section of Salmagundi’s.
The Chamber’s sponsoring a new ad campaign to keep chasing away the winter blues - "Hot Gifts in Cold Spring for Valentine’s Day." Look, If you think your sweetheart’s a Whitman’s Sampler and dinner at Denny’s, go to Fishkill. Otherwise, shop local.
We were working for Philipstown at our Board meeting on MLK Day. Necessary architectural ground work for the planned rest station information kiosk, is now underway. We need a little local map directory for visitors walking the village. We’ll look for help from the Putnam County Visitor’s Bureau to create a four paneled flyer to guide visitor’s here.
There will be hot music! Summer Sundays evenings, the Chamber will sponsor four performances by various musicians. A little help from local sponsors will give us lovely sounds to match our river views, meet our neighbors and people watch the visitors, every summer Sunday. Please Contact Cathryn Fadde at her restaurant to help, 265-5582. Jeff Wigdor of Stationery Objects is also making a deal with a bank to give Chamber members low credit card service rates. We’ll have details in our newsletter next month, at our General Membership Meeting March 6th, or call Jeff at 265-3473. The big meeting is free to all members, with hors d’ouvres compliments of your Chamber and the Garrison Golf Club. We’ll network over cocktails, gather in ideas for action, create a self employed committee, a Christmas street light task force, vote on dues, and have a Q and A with Cold Spring Mayor Tony Phillips.
Finally, I encourage everyone to again help us preserve and perpetuate all we enjoy here in Philipstown. Even if your business does not directly draw customers locally, you were drawn here by things we need to encourage. Keep current with your dues, but more importantly call to volunteer or share ideas. Again, do business in Philipstown with your friends and neighbors.
