Chamber Notes
by Jonathan Kruk

When Cecil Lindstedt got the Cold Spring Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the first Fall arts and crafts fair around 1978, the idea was as crazed a four-dollar frappachino. Now, both craft fairs and frappe coffees are everywhere. Our’s may not have the slick swagger of Lynnhurst’s, or the preciously cool feel of Woodstock’s, but they owe us for opening the Hudson Valley to the event. Now, we innovate on the craft fair by returning to it’s roots. This year the fair features more local and regional artisans than past fairs. We’ll have Tony Moore’s ceramics, water color cards by Cheryl Johnson, Rachel Piasechi’s gift crafts, Monica Singh’s folk art, hand made journals by Teresa Cox, Aline Ratau’s kids towels, plus photography, jewelry, baby blankets, pillows, masks, frames, wood works, sculpture, leather goods, vintage linens and over forty five vendors you’ll enjoy shopping. Everything’s hand crafted. We even have a healing arts booth to keep the touch light and local. Park on the side streets or in the Fair Street lot by Riverview.

The day begins with the revival of the traditional 10K race, but there’s a triple twist. The First Family Triathlon starts at 9am sharp at Northgate Dockside with a kayak paddle to Little Stony Point. There, racers land on Sandy Beach, and sprint to their bikes stationed at the caretaker’s cottage. They tour de France down Fair Street, round Northern to High to Furnace to Rock to Main to Lunn to Market and (whew) back to Dockside. Finally, they dash a loop around the crafters on Main Street and finish strong at the Bandstand. Terri Barr will generously let family teams use Hudson Valley Outfitters’ kayaks free. She’s also donating a kayak as first prize for the fastest family team. Capt. Pierre’s Outdoor Sports will give the first open team a sailboat cruise. Hudson House, Le Bouchon, and Eastside Kitchen all will award lunch for three for prizes. Simple Elegance of Garrison donated a Provence 1800’s model clock for the race’s best sport. Best views of the race are Mayor’s Park, Depot Restaurant Plaza, Lower Main and the Bandstand. Get three people, thirty bucks and call 265 0221 to race. Cool Moxie designed tee shirts go to all entrants.

We raised almost two thousand dollars toward a hook and ladder truck at the Summer Sunset Music Series of concerts. Thanks to the musicians; The New York Swing Exchange, Ian and the Bluelights, The Satellites, The Robert Hill Band, and MotherLode for giving us magical evenings by the river. Next Summer, we we plan to expand to eight Sundays. Further, our hook and ladder fund raising will attract grants and move those most in need of the truck, Main Street building owners, to seriously contribute. Now, we just need to get Gus Serroukas up to speed on super market’s reconstruction!

The Chamber invites all those interested in business here in Philipstown, and everyone wanting to improve our community, to join us at the Garrison Golf Club for our General Membership Meeting, October 1st. Susan Bates, Chair of the 202 Committee, will share the ideas and plans for shaping our future here. Come at 6:30 for networking and drinks. The meeting starts at 7:30. We’ll hear from Mike Allen of the Cold Spring Fire Department, vote on board members, and welcome your suggestions. It’s just $20. for a buffet including tip. Please call 265 9525 to give us a head count.

Come out to Philipstown Community Day at the Open Space Institute’s Capuchin Friary property September 29th 1-6pm. The local organizations that make life worthwhile here in the Hudson Highlands will be there demonstrating what they do. There’s entertainment too! Come to join in on the fun as a volunteer. We all could use more help. Often, you’ll just need to give a few hours of your time per year to keep our community alive and flowing.

Finally, look for our Candidates Forum next month, and on November 6th, the Chamber will sponsor the first forum for all those self employed people wanting stimulation or a shoulder to cry on. Heigh ho! Come to the Fall Festival!
