Spring Programs are Blooming at The Butterfield Library
The Julia L. Butterfield Library is pleased to announce the return of the weekly story hours for the Spring season.
The Library will offer three, five-week programs starting the week of April 14. The week begins with Littlest Bookworms, a story and play hour for children 2 to 3 years. Children will be able to play on soft toys and with the Legos and trains before gathering to read an interactive story. Little Bookworms, the popular Pre-school story
hour, will be held on Mondays at 1:30pm. Children ages 35 years are invited to listen to two stories, play a game and do a related craft. The focus is on pre-reading skills such as letter recognition, rhyming and repetition. For infants, toddlers, and their parents and/or caretakers, Bouncing Babies will now be known as Baby Bookworms and
will meet on Tuesdays at 10am. This social hour consists of free play on soft toys followed by a short story, some favorite songs, and bubbles. This program provides a nice opportunity for families to meet and tots to spend time with other children. Programs will run through the week of May 19. There will be no programs the week of April 21
due to Haldane's spring break.
There will be many special programs throughout the Spring season. Please visit the library website at www.butterfieldlibrary.com for more information or contact Programming and Outreach Coordinator Maureen McGrath at mcgrathm@bestweb.com or 265-3040.
Rosetta Stone Language Learning Program Available free Online through The Butterfield Library
The Rosetta Stone Language Learning Program is now available at the Butterfield Library. This program offers a fast, easy way to learn a variety of languages, including English, Spanish, French, Italian and more.
The Rosetta Stone method imitates the way we all learned our first language as children: without dictionaries or grammar books, without memorization or translation. Well before school we learned the basics of language by associating new words with familiar objects, actions, and ideas. It's the natural approach to learning language. It's
great for kids too. Experts point to studies that show learning a second language increases children's problem-solving abilities, verbal skills, and creativity.
Rosetta Stone is available through the Butterfield Library, any time of the day or night, by visiting the Library website at www.butterfieldlibrary.org. All you need is access to the Internet and your library card number to get started today.

The Julia L. Butterfield
Memorial Library of Cold Spring, NY was established by a bequest
under the will of the late Julia L. Butterfield. The will
directed "That a building to be used as a library and
reading room be constructed and held in trust for use and benefit
of the inhabitants of the villages of Cold Spring and
Nelsonville."
Thirty thousand dollars
was donated by Mrs. Butterfield to purchase the land and erect a
building. Another thirty thousand was left in trust to be used to
maintain the building, grounds and to purchase books. She also
bequeathed her collection of paintings, the most famous being
"A Pic-Nic on the Hudson" by Thomas Prichard Rossiter.
Today, the Library
offers a wide variety of services and programs to all the
residents of Philipstown. The library has a variety of computers
for public use. Free Internet access is available for research
purposes as well as a word processing program for writing papers
or resumes. The library subscribes to Ebsco, an online magazine
database with access to over 600 magazines. Printers and a coin
operated copy machine are also available.
Aside from offering
traditional printed materials to the community, other programs
and services provided by the Butterfield Library include:
Interlibrary loans, educational and cultural programs for
children and adults, space for organizations and people to meet,
story hour and summer reading programs for children, an outreach
program for the elderly, a tutoring site for the Literacy
Volunteers of America, and more.
The Butterfield Library
is located on Morris Ave. (Rt. 9D), within walking distance of
Main Street, Cold Spring.
