Story Writing for Seniors at the Desmond-Fish Library

A writing class designed especially for seniors will be offered at the Desmond-Fish Library in May.

Desmond-Fish Library Awarded Monies Through Mid-Hudson Library System's to Establish a Health Information Center

Summer teen intern program is a component

The Mid-Hudson Library System's Health Information Project announces the award of $5,490 to the Desmond-Fish Library to establish a Health Information Center. The Desmond-Fish Library joins 16 other centers throughout five counties of the Mid Hudson Library System. The award is made possible through funding from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and Dutchess County government.

The award helps The Desmond-Fish Library provide information about substance abuse prevention and related health issues of concern to young people, their families, educators and organizations serving youth. Funds will be used to conduct a summer Teen Intern Program for reviewing and recommending current age-appropriate DVD's, videos, websites and books. In addition, a TV/DVD viewer will be supplied to the Desmond-Fish Library. The Health Information Project will then promote material all available free of charge through member libraries of the Mid-Hudson Library System that is chosen by the teen interns to the community, schools and agencies. Funds will be provided to pay six teens to review DVD's and other material four hours a week during the summer. Teens who are interested in these positions should pick up a job application at the library.

"We are delighted to have been chosen as a Health Information Project Center", said Carol Donick, director of the Desmond-Fish Library. "One of the most important things public libraries do is to provide information on a variety of health issues. This is one way in which libraries not only enrich people's lives, but sometimes save lives."

The Desmond-Fish Library is located at the intersection of Routes 403 and 9D in Garrison. It is open from 10 to 5 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 2 to 9 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 10 to 4 on Saturdays, and 1 to 5 on Sundays. More information may be found by visiting the Health Information Project's website at http://hip.midhudson.org.

Yoga Class Series Begins at Desmond Fish Library

Beginning Friday April 4, Meredith Laubin, a long-time yoga practitioner, and Yee Yoga Institute certified instructor, will offer a series of 10 weeks of classes in Hatha Yoga in the spacious program room of the Desmond-Fish Library located at the junction of Rts 9D and 403, in Garrison. The classes are open to adults over 18. Classes will continue through June 6 every Friday morning. Hatha [hot-tah'] yoga is an ancient Indian healing program that gives you improved alignment and range of motion, increased strength, balance and muscle-control. Breath control and increased oxygen intake are a central part of every session. This adds up to exercise that's fun, relieves stress, provides endless challenge and complements many sport activities. Ms. Laubin will also offer classes in Meditation and Pranayama a form of breath control that anyone can learn and practice. Gradually breathing becomes deeper, capacity increases and oxygen utilization is improved. Both classes are excellent for stress management, and lead to increased circulation to organs. This will be followed by a practice of quiet sitting and walking, with breath focus.

Ms. Laubin's personal practice of yoga began about 40 years ago and has been developed in a disciplined way since 1996. Her training was led by Richard Rosen, senior editor of Yoga Journal, and Rodney Yee, well-known teacher and creator of training videos. Meditation is part of her daily practice. Her training is from the Chuang Yen Monastery, located on Route 301 in Kent, NY.

The fee is $110 for ten 75-minute sessions and a portion of the fee is to be donated to the Desmond Fish Library General Fund. Please call the Library at 424-3020 or email Meredith Laubin at youcanyoga@yahoo.com for further information.

Opened in the Fall of 1980, the Alice Curtis Desmond and Hamilton Fish Library has served as a center for the Philipstown community and as a resource for residents of all ages. The founders chose Federal style architecture and fine woodwork in soft, warm tones for the gracious building that they established on the thirteen acre site.

The Desmond Fish Library has grown and developed into one of the leading facilities in the Hudson Valley, with a registration of 96% of the chartered population. Beyond a current book collection of 25,000 titles and a selection of 100 periodicals, the Library offers current and retrospective films on videotapes and unabridged books on tape. Children's programs begin at age one with the Parent/Child Workshop and culminate with teaching research skills to students from the Garrison School. Computers provide access to the Internet, CD ROM'S, and a database of articles from 650 magazines. The Library Program Room is utilized by many area organizations as their regular meeting space.

A strong "Friends" organization holds fundraisers throughout the year. Their largest event is the annual booksale in August, and the annual holiday crafts fair in December.

The Desmond-Fish Library is located at the intersection of Route 9D & 403,Garrison, NY.
