Garrison Art Center Presents Annual Spring Artists on Location Art Auction

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, Garrison Art Center will host the Annual Spring Artists on Location Art Auction, featuring more than 85 professional artists from the tri-state area. This biannual fundraiser, a signature event of GAC for 26 years, brings artists to the Hudson Valley for a day of painting au pleine air at a location of their choice. The newly-created river and landscape paintings, in various media, are then available for purchase that afternoon under the auction tent in the "backyard" of GAC, Garrison's Landing Park. Garrison Art Center's location, is unique in its beauty, with the grandeur of West Point on the opposite shore and views north and south to well-known Hudson Highland mountains, ridges and points of interest. GAC is happy to have auctioneers George Lowry and his son Nicho from Swann Galleries in New York City. The Auction is fast-paced and entertaining; it's wonderful live-action entertainment and is for the benefit of GAC, and all who attend. Half the purchase price of each painting sold is tax deductible.

This Spring, the Auction invitation postcard and poster feature the work of a long standing Auction artist Shawn Dell Joyce from upstate New York. Adding to the spirit of the event, a hand-colored Auction poster, signed by all of the participating artists, will start the bidding at the Spring's Live Auction! An exhibition of signed posters from years past will be on display, with some past limited edition posters still available for purchase.

The Live Auction begins at 5pm, rain or shine, and usually ends by 7pm. Come at 3pm to enjoy a wine and cheese reception, and view the paintings. Don't forget to check out the silent auction (same artists, different art), which will be on exhibit in the galleries through Sunday, May 25. The Silent Auction opens at 3pm with the reception. Each Silent Auction painting will have a bidding card placed on the wall next to it for easy bidding. Bid silently to get in the mood for the Live Auction! Bidding paddles for the Live Auction will be for sale in the auction tent prior to the Live Auction. Free parking is available in the MetroNorth Parking Lot (parking passes are not required on the weekend). Come across the train tracks through the underground passage at the north end of the parking lot or take the trestle at the main parking lot. Don't forget - allow plenty of time for parking, paddle buying and viewing! Or come earlier and watch the artists who stay and paint on the Landing.

Two-Day Exhibition of Students in David Loeb's Class at Garrison Art Center

On May 8 and 9, concluding with a reception Friday evening, May 9, 7-9pm, GAC will highlight oil paintings by students who have been studying with Cold Spring artist David Loeb in his Figure and Portrait Painting classes at Garrison Art Center for the past few years.

This will be the first opportunity for the community to appreciate exciting observational figurative work that, until now, has been witnessed only by students registered in the classes.

Exhibiting artists include Sharona Berken, Lesli Uribe, Christina Labrie, Maryann Syrek, Kate Hoekstra, Marybeth Alpern, Brian Harrold, and Ann Provan.

These contemporary artists are dedicated to a tradition of painting still life and the figure from life, in oil. Their work portrays the challenge of depicting still life and the structure of the figure in space and light. Various techniques, including limited palettes and indirect painting, show this tradition continues to be a powerful tool to personal expression.

Loeb notes that by displaying work publicly students gain "a deeper understanding of how profoundly the work is their own, much like a writer or poet hearing his work read aloud by someone else." If you are thinking of picking up a brush, this will give you a wonderful insight into Loeb's class and style of teaching. As students receive both individual and group critiques, Loeb's students are loyal. He is a well respected teaching artist.

Please come to the Art Center for the reception Friday, May 9 to celebrate with the artists their accomplishments. The gallery will be open Thursday from noon to 5pm and on Friday from noon to 9pm. For further information please call 424-3960 and visit www.garrisonartcenter.org for other events and classes.

Drawing from the Live Model and More offered toYoung Artists at Garrison Art Center

Newly established Fine Arts Programming for Young Artists is available at Garrison Art Center. At its core is the new Drawing from the Live Model for Young Artists. By providing area art students with instruction in life drawing this class answers a distinct need of college-bound students in the development of their portfolios. The class also provides a non-competitive setting for students to grow in the company of peers that share their serious excitement about being an artist. Drawing from the Live Model for Young Artists will be instructed by Carinda Swann, Professor of Art, Marist College, and the coordinator of GAC's on-going Summer Art Institute. The Monday evening class, 6:30- 9:30, will run for eight weeks, and begins on April 14.

All young artists deserve this opportunity for self-evaluation to acknowledge the importance of art in their future. Students will experience the creative energy of drawing from the live model, enrich themselves with individualized college-level instruction, and work in a professional studio atmosphere. Each drawing class is followed by a critique of displayed work in which students participate and learn from each other's successes. There is no competition between students. On their quest for achievement, the class becomes a support system for each individual.

Other on-going spring class offerings include Drawing with Jaanika Peerna, who is a Cold Spring-based teaching artist. She has students work in a variety of media and also includes critique as part of the class. Her class on Thursday evening runs six sessions, 7:30 9:30. Also a Cold Spring-based teaching artist, David Loeb, offers Painting from the Model in Oil. He uses various techniques and cites historical examples to view figurative painting in its larger context within contemporary art. Loeb's class is eight sessions on Wednesday evening, 7-10. Expert silkscreen artist and Director of GAC's Educational Programming, offers his silkscreen class on Wednesday, 3-6 and new to GAC, teaching artist Erin Koch offers an introduction to watercolor. An additional class for beginners, Introduction to Painting, is offered by GAC at the Philipstown Recreation Center by teaching artist Ada Pilar Cruz. For this class please register at the Rec Dept, 424-4662.

GAC's Young Artist Programming mission brings together many successful on-going programs such as the Mentor Program, School Invitational Theme Exhibition, Summer Art Institute, and the upcoming Portfolio Support Day, April 26. Last Saturday, March 29, the Mentor Program and SITE high-school exhibitions opened with a reception for the artists to a large crowd of friends and family. It is a very impressive output of creativity and all in the community should visit GAC during gallery hours, noon5 daily and see how the professional mentors, teachers and young artists worked to expand their creative lives.

All these programs and classes can be explored further by visiting www.garrisonartcenter or by calling 424-3960. Explore them quickly though, as classes begin in less than two weeks!

Garrison Art Center Hosts CURRENT: A Sculpture Tour

2nd annual outdoor juried exhibition at five Garrison landmark locations

Building on the successful premiere launch of their outdoor summer exhibition last year, Garrison Art Center will host their second "expanded" annual summer sculpture exhibition, CURRENT: A Sculpture Tour, on view June 1 through August 11. The exhibition, which last year was set at four landmark Garrison sites, will include a fifth site and exhibit artwork from regional artists as well as artists of national and international notoriety selected by a jury of three distinguished art authorities. The Garrison exhibition offers visitors access to five breathtaking vista sites including: the riverfront grounds of Boscobel; the woodland paths of the historic former home of designer Russel Wright at Manitoga; the meadows of the Desmond-Fish Library; the riverbanks of Garrison's Landing, home to Garrison Art Center; and the riverfront park and pier in Cold Spring. All exhibits are free and open to the public. A trolley is available to accommodate visitors from the Metro North parking lot to Boscobel and down Main Street in Cold Spring.

In addition to the exhibit, to benefit the Garrison Art Center's Gillette Scholarship Fund, GAC will host a "Meet the Artists" preview Tour and Party May 31 from 2-6pm. The price to attend the party is $50 per person. For reservations to attend CURRENT: A Sculpture Tour Preview and Party, please contact www.garrisonartcenter.org. 100% of proceeds from the Preview Party event and from the sale of artwork endow GAC's scholarship fund. The Gillette Scholarship Fund is available to deserving artists of any age for classes and workshops, including the Summer Arts on the Hudson for children age 6 through 13 and the Summer Art Institute, an immersion program for high school students. Selection of recipients is need-based. GAC is proud to be able to offer this opportunity to art students and emerging and established artists. To inquire about scholarships please contact GAC.

Tour maps will be available at all sites throughout the exhibition. House tours at Boscobel 265-3638 and Manitoga 424-3812 are not a part of the tour, but can be arranged by contacting those organizations directly.

The jury for CURRENT 2008 includes: Merrill Falkenberg, curator of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT; artist Edward Smith, a Guggenheim Fellow in sculpture and drawing and a distinguished professor of art; and Grace Knowlton, an artist of international renown primarily known for her sculpture but equally accomplished as a two-dimensional artist.

According to Libby Turnock, Executive Director of GAC, "In keeping with GAC's continuing goal of fostering the arts and of community outreach, the purpose of this exhibition is to host a community-wide collaboration that brings artists' works of national and international notoriety to our own doorstep and to raise monies for GAC's Gillette Scholarship Fund."

Co-chairs for CURRENT 2008 are Maryann Syrek and Carinda Swann.

Garrison Arts Center Partners with Philipstown Rec to Develop Expanded Art Programming

In a new "off-campus" relationship, Garrison Art Center has partnered with the Philipstown Recreation Department to develop expanded art programming at the Philipstown Community Center. Children and adults looking to get serious fun out of the arts will enjoy these new opportunities.

Starting in April, classes and workshops introduce the new "Media Lab" and "Introduction to Art" themes. To ensure personal attention class sizes are limited, so don't delay in signing up. Refer to page 13 in the Philipstown Recreation Department's Spring Catalogue to review GAC programs at the Philipstown Recreation Department.

The Media Lab makes new technology accessible and fun. Take "Get To Know Your Digital Camera" to finally figure out how your new camera works. If your summer pictures were a disaster last year, take "Capture Your Children Digitally" and figure out how to get things right. Intimidated by Photoshop?

Stop letting that user-friendly software push you around. Sign up for "Intro To Adobe Photoshop" to make it all accessible. Is your floor length mirror seeing a young, budding actress or actor daily? Sign your child up for the wonderful video class "Acting For The Camera"!

Introduction To Art Classes are structured for adults interested in exploring art making. Basic Drawing will be held in mornings weekly, and Introduction To Painting will be offered evenings weekly. Each provides an opportunity to enjoy exploring the fundamentals. Taught in the Community Center Art Studio, budding artists will have the right setting and instruction to get under way with learning.

All programs are designed for beginners, and are taught by professional artists eager to introduce fundamental skills. Talented instructors Lori Adams, Jamie Thivierge, and Ada Pilar Cruz will help you or your child achieve confidence quickly through a strong start in the right direction. GAC at the Rec: What a great chance to have fun trying new things!

Call Philipstown Recreation Department at 424-4618 for more information and to register.
