Youth Gaming Club at Howland Library
Come out of your room and show us what you got! Get together with friends and peers at Howland Public Library at 313 Main St. in Beacon and enjoy video games and refreshments. Kids between the ages of 10-17 are invited to join
the Howland Public Library's Gaming Club on Friday, May 16 from 3-5 pm.
Kids can test their gaming skills while having fun playing various games, including Guitar Hero, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, and Bowling on the Wii and Playstation 2.
Howland Public Library is the recipient of a New York State Library mini-grant provided through Mid-Hudson Library System that will enable the library to purchase more gaming equipment and games for the Club.
The Gaming Club will meet every 3rd Friday of the month from 3-5pm. As the library did earlier this year, the Club will hold tournaments for prizes two or three times per year. Feel free to call Ginny Figlia, Youth Services Librarian,
at 831-1134, ex.103 if you have any questions. We ask players to please bring their own controller if they have one, and games from home are welcome.
Baby & Me Lap Time at Howland Library
Parents and caregivers are invited to bring babies, birth up to age 24 months, to Howland Public Library on 313 Main St. in Beacon for a six-week session of the "Baby & Me" story and lap time program beginning Tuesday, May 13
and running through June 17. The lap time will be held on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 11:15.
During the first half of the program, the children's librarian will introduce simple books, rhymes, lap games, and songs to everyone. After the lap time, babies and adults may share a playtime and socialize together. It is suggested that
baby have this time alone with their adult, however, siblings are welcome. No pre-registration is necessary. Feel free to contact Ginny Figlia, Youth Services Librarian, at 831-1134, ex.103 if you have any questions.
Award-Winning Artist Rieko Fujinami to Give Slide Presentation and Talk at Howland Library
Artist Rieko Fujinami will give a slide presentation,
Anonymous: the artist looks at Faces, about her work and art philosophy, at the Howland Public Library Community Room, on Thursday, May 15, 7pm. This event is co-sponsored
by the New York Foundation for the Arts, from whom, in 2007, she received a NYFA Fellowship Award , a highly competitive cash prize made to individual artists living and working in the state of New York.
Ms. Fujinami creates art using many different media including etching, copper tempera, frottage/drawing, fresco secco, drawing on clear film, glass painting, and digital imaging. Her presentation will focus on her most recent frescos
and film drawings, the philosophy behind her work, and a glimpse of her studio and working methods.
She was born in Kisarazu, Japan, and knew from a early age that she wanted to be an artist. She received her undergraduate degree from Creative Art University and Graduate degree from Tama Art University, both in Tokyo. She has
lived and worked in Beacon since 2003.
Wii Bowling for Seniors at Howland Library
Calling all seniors to join the hottest game in town. The action-packed, virtual bowling game known as Wii bowling, that is. The Howland Public Library will starting a weekly Wii bowling event for senior citizens beginning on
Monday, April 21, 2008, from 1pm until 3pm. Get ready to yell "Strike!" as you enjoy all the fun and excitement of real bowling minus the heavy ball.
This event is free and no registration is required.
Evening Book Club Scheduled at Howland Library
The Howland Public Library's Evening Book Club will be meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, from 6:30pm until 7:30pm, in the Library's Local History Room. This month's book selection is

"Knit Together" Adult Knitting Club to Begin at Howland Public Library
Why knit on your own when you can knit together with fellow knitters? A newly-formed, weekly knitting club at the Howland Public Library will begin Tuesday, April 8 from 10 to 11:30am in the library's Local History Room. Local
knitter Phyllis Sandford, will be teaching the club an assortment of projects. Ms. Sandford has done design work for numerous yarn companies, been published in a variety of magazines, and co-authored, along with Sharon Mann, the book
titled Crochet Kid Stuff. Ms. Sandford has donated a copy of her book to the library.
The first knitting project will be a scarf. Already have a scarf? Feel free to bring along any knitting projects you choose. Please bring size 15 knitting needles to the first club meeting. A skein of yarn will be provided. All levels of
experience are welcome from experienced to novice. Join the fun and camaraderie of knitting together.

Doggie Tales Reading Buddies at Howland Library
Howland Public Library on 313 Main St., in Beacon invites elementary school aged students to participate in Doggie Tales Reading Buddies held every 4th Monday of the month from 4-5 pm. Children who need practice, especially
those with reading difficulties, will have the opportunity to read-out-loud to a specially trained therapy dog from Positive Paws. "Dogs are wonderful they listen patiently and they don't criticize." Children will have the opportunity to sit
with the dog in a quiet spot in the library, get to know the dog, choose a book, and read to their furry buddy. The child can relax and forget about how hard he/she thinks reading is, and instead, look forward to it.
With help from the wonderful volunteers from Positive Paws, the Howland Public Library hopes to enhance children's love of books and lay the foundation for a lifetime of reading and learning. Positive Paws will be at the library
every fourth Monday of the month throughout the school year between the hours of 4-5 pm. Parents may sign children up on a monthly basis for a 15-minute time slot. Ten students may be signed up each month. Parents can sign children up
more than once, however, the library will try to accommodate as many children as possible, giving those who have not had a turn priority. Registration is ongoing so please register by contacting Ginny Figlia, Youth Services Librarian, at

Saturday Lunchtime Writers' Club for Kids at Howland Library
The Saturday Lunchtime Writers' Club for students in grades 4 and up will meet every second and fourth Saturday of the month at Howland Public Library in Beacon between 12-1:30 pm beginning February 23. Students who love to
write and would like to get together with others who enjoy creative writing are invited to join forces in a relaxing atmosphere to pursue their hobby under the instruction of Susan Ruckdeschel. Students may bring something they have written:

Come & Play Wednesdays Begin Again at Howland Library
Howland Public Library and the Wee Play Community Project are joining forces again to bring you Come & Play Wednesdays at Howland Public Library on 313 Main St. in Beacon. Please note the new day. The library's Community
Room will be open as a playroom from 10:30am to noon beginning Wednesday, Feb. 6 for babies and young children with their parents/caregivers for a time of play and socializing. The purpose of Come & Play is to provide a fun destination
for active play during the colder months. There will be an open-door play date every Wednesday that does not require any registration. Toys, larger equipment and music are provided, however, participants are welcome to bring a toy to share
Howland Public Library has been serving the community since 1875 and offers many enriching programs for children of all ages. If you have a child between the ages of 2-6, the library also offers Toddler Tales for very young
children on Wednesday mornings and Story Time for children ages 3 and up on Thursday mornings between 10:30-11:15am.
