Donald J. Clarke, Sr.

Donald J. Clarke, Sr. of Cold Spring died on Friday, January 21, 2000 at Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Peekskill/Cortlandt at the age of 74.

Born on August 7, 1926 in Beacon, he was the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth McCreary Clarke. Mr. Clarke was a retired lab technician for Texaco, Inc. in Glenham. A life-long area resident, he was a parishioner of Our Lady of Loretto Church where he was an usher. Mr. Clarke was a life member of the Cold Spring Fire Company #1, a former Village of Cold Spring Trustee from 1978 to1985, and past president and vice president of the Philipstown Senior Citizens.

He was predeceased by his wife, the late Frances M. (Peggy) Lyons Clarke in July of 1998. Two sisters, Joan Clarke and Eleanor Giordano, and one grandchild, Ellen Beaudry, also predeceased him.

Survivors include one son, Donald J. Clarke, Jr. of Cold Spring. Three daughters, Donna Steltz and Elizabeth Mancari, both of Cold Spring and Mary Hale of Beacon and seven grandchildren also survive.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, January 25, 2000. Interment followed in Cold Spring Cemetery, under the arrangements of Clinton Funeral Home, Cold Spring.

Joseph A. Payne

Joseph Alfred Payne, age 69, of Honesdale, PA, a former North Highlands resident, died Friday morning, January 14, 2000 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale following an illness. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Bernadette Herleth. The couple married on December 15, 1956.

Born March 11, 1930 in New York City, Mr. Payne graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Queens, NY and then graduated from St. Francis College with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Joseph received his Masters degree in Banking and Finance from New York University. He worked for 30 years for Chase Manhattan Bank, retiring as Senior Vice President and five years with the Industrial Bank of Japan. He resided in North Highlands before moving to Honesdale six years ago.

Joseph was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a member of the 508th Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division. He had recently been a member of the Walter E. Hughes Tri-State Mid-Hudson Airborne Chapter. He was an original member of the North Highlands Engine Company #1 in Philipstown and served as secretary-treasurer and commissioner. He attended both St. John Parish, Honesdale and St. Joseph’s parish, White Mills.

In addition to his wife, Bernadette, he is survived by one son, Scott F. Payne and wife Karen of Poughkeepsie, NY and his dog, Missey.

His funeral was conducted from the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main Street, Honesdale, PA on Tuesday, January 18 with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, Honesdale. Cremation followed at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory, Archbald. His ashes will be intered in St. Mary Magdalen’s Cemetery.

Michael F. Grassi

Michael F. Grassi, age 80, of Garrison, NY died on Friday, January 14, 2000 at Westledge Nursing Home in Peekskill, NY.

Born on October 9, 1919 in Ossining, NY he was the son of the late Frank and Alfia Grassi. Mr. Grassi was a long-time Garrison resident and the retired owner/operator of Grassi’s service station in Garrison.

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Mrs. Dorothy J. Harrington Grassi of Willits, CA; one nephew, Dr. Frank J. Grassi of Willits, CA; and one niece, Priscilla S. Farrel of Vacaville, CA. He was predeceased by one brother, Peter Grassi and one sister, Ida M. Grassi.

Private cremation took place in Ferncliff Crematory in Hartsdale, NY. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Clinton Funeral Home, Cold Spring.
