New Yorkers Buckling Up In Record Numbers Enforcement efforts help safety belt use above 85 percent mark
State Police Superintendent James W. McMahon has announced that safety belt use climbed above 85 percent in New York State for the first time ever, following the multi-agency, zero tolerance enforcement efforts conducted between May 20 - 29, 2000, in conjunction with the Buckle Up New York Campaign. The record use rate represents the average of more than 100 individual surveys from across the state, conducted to measure the impact of the enforcement and education campaign. On average, 86 percent of motorists were buckled up compared with 80 percent prior to the enforcement wave.
