Nelsonville Blazes Ahead With Trail Marking
At the August 7 meeting of the Nelsonville Board of Trustees, Greenway Committee Chairman Walter Garschagen updated the Board on the trail preparation work being done on the former Lone Star land owned by Open Space Institute. Mr. Garschagen showed the Board the preliminary designs for informational kiosk displays, which are to be constructed in parking areas at the trailheads. The displays will contain trail maps, local history and a description of local flora and fauna. In response to a question by Mayor Bill Merando, Garschagen said he understood that OSI had ordered the kiosks built, but would follow up regarding their completion date. Garschagen also informed the Board that the Superintendent of the New York State Department of Parks had approved the submitted trail design, which will allow the Greenway Committee to begin blazing the trail with markers. The Mayor said that a parking area for hikers off Gate House Road had been cleared and blacktopped, and that the aforementioned informational kiosk will be installed at this site. The Mayor said that the Village and the Greenway Committee were grateful to Mr. Stewart for allowing the parking lot to be built on his property.
