Putnam County Receives Settlement $$ For Housing State Inmates In County Jail
Sheriff Robert Thoubboron reported that Putnam County has received $137,075.56 from the New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS). The money is payment for the cost of holding inmates in the Putnam County Correctional Facility after they have been sentenced to state prison. Full Story
Cold Spring Board Of Trustees Approves Water Rate Increase
At their December monthly meeting, the Village of Cold Spring Board of Trustees approved an increase in the water usage rate of 49 cents per thousand gallons of water, to $2.34. Trustee Thomas Valentine said Village residents would not see the increase until their April water bills, as it cannot be retroactive. Full Story

Draft Report From Haldane Long-Range Planning Committee Makes New Recommendations For School Expansion "Everyday Math" curriculum is discussed
Elementary school teacher Judy Finehirsh started off the workshop with a presentation on a math curriculum titled, "Everyday Math" - its features, routines and topics. She showed some key features of the Everyday Math curriculum. She explained that she herself is not a mathematician, but she is a teacher of children and the goal of the Everyday Math program is to enable children to use math with understanding. As demonstrated by Ms. Finehirsh, math means more when it is rooted in real-life problems and situations. Children can learn more than is usually expected because they know more than what they are given credit for. Experience gives children a rich store from which they can develop math insight, reasoning and creativity. Full Story

P.V. Town Board Meeting Includes Discussion And Public Hearing On Earning Exemptions For Seniors And Disabled, Temporary Six Month Building Moratorium
At the Putnam Valley Town Board meeting held on Wednesday, December 13, the Town Board adopted a resolution to increase the senior exemption for reducing the assessed value on real property. This in turn will reduce the amount of taxes required to be paid. If a senior, 65 years of age or older, has an annual income of $0 to $20,000, there would be a 50% reduction in their assessed real property value. At top line, seniors cannot make more than $28,899.99, and would receive a 5% reduction in assessed real property value. Annual income is calculated as the combined household income. Full Story
