Manitou Area Residents Organize Against Wooly Adelgid
The landscape has changed dramatically in parts of Philipstown. Areas that once had a mystical quality are now devastated. If you did not know the cause, you would think there had been a severe fire - but the homes are untouched. Some of the hardest hit areas are in the Manitou section, the southwest corner of Philipstown, from Beverly Brook to the Bear Mountain Bridge, from the river to the top of the hills overlooking the Hudson Highlands. Once majestic hemlock groves now stand as dead spindles of wood - ominous monuments - now only reminders of their past glory.
