Matt Pergamo Takes 7 Medals At State Gymnastics Championships
Sixth-grade Haldane student Matthew Pergamo placed in all six events at the New York State Optional Gymnastics Championships on Sunday, March 17, which were held where he trains at World Cup Gymnastics in Chappaqua, NY. Matt took first place on rings, second on high bar and pommel horse, third on floor exercise and parallel bars and fourth on vault, for a second all-around finish in Level 4. Last year his training progressed so well that head coach Carl Schrade allowed him to skip the compulsory Level 5 and moved him into the more difficult optionals, where gymnasts can make up their own routines incorporating certain requirements. (Level I is the level required for college entry, where a gymnast may or may not move on to Elite or World Class). Matt, who trains at least twenty hours a week, also qualified for the Regional Championships, which will be held in Allentown, PA, in April. Several of his teammates also qualified for Regionals, and together they won first place for the Team Championship at Level 4.
