William C. Nichter

William C. Nichter (Bill), a long-time resident of Garrison, died on May 13, 2002. He was 82 years old.

A pilot, he flew with American Airlines for 30 years, 27 of them in the left seat. His entire career with the airline was without incident; he retired in 1980.

Bill also flew and instructed in small aircraft and gliders, having owned a 1939 J-3 Piper Cub and a WWII Vintage Stearman. He flew his first solo flight at age 13 and was licensed at 16.

A World War II Veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps. In addition, he was a past president of the New York State Pilots Association.

Bill’s funeral mass was said at Sacred Heart Church in Dobbs Ferry, NY, on May 17, 2002.

He is survived by his five children, William Nichter of Yonkers, Jayne Eway of New York City, Donna Enright of Dobbs Ferry, Patricia Nichter Cornwell and John Nichter of Garrison; three stepsons, William Malarkey of Norfolk, VA, Charles Malarkey of San Francisco, CA and Daniel Malarkey of Fort Montgomery, NY; and six grandchildren.
