Legislature To Consider Formation Of Agricultural District To Protect Farms Town Boards say district would elevate farmer’s rights over other residents
Putnam County is a community in flux. As real estate values rise and attract a growing number of developers, the few farmers that continue to make a living raising livestock or growing crops here fear the encroachment of those unaccustomed to their way of life. Some of those farmers have been petitioning the County for the establishment of an agricultural district that would protect their right to farm. Approximately 120 parcels of land have been identified as a potential district. These parcels include residential and commercial properties as well as farms. The issue, which is a controversial one that could pit town boards against county government, has been tabled in legislative committee for the past year and a half.
