Brother Joseph Marie Zakia

Funeral services were held at Graymoor in Garrison for Bro. Joseph Marie Zakia, SA, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement, who died Thursday, September 5, at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 81 years old.

Bro. Joseph Marie was born Monroe A. Zakia in Rochester, New York, where he graduated from Holy Rosary Elementary School and Jefferson High School. After serving in the U. S. Coast Guard for over 8 years, he entered the Franciscan Friars od the Atonement-Graymoor in 1951. He was clothed in the habit in 1952, professed his first vows in 1954 and his final vows in 1960.

He served his community in a variety of administrative positions. He served in the culinary arts department of Our Lady of the Atonement Novitiate, Valley Falls, Rhode Island and at Graymoor. He also served as secretary to the Guardian at Graymoor and to the Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement for eight years.

Since 1971 he served as a staff member and retreat director of the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center. In this ministry, he directed retreats, led prayer services, and was involved in the charismatic movement and alcoholism counseling. The prayer services led by him were consistently mentioned as being one of the highlights of the retreats. As Father James Gardiner, SA director of the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, said, "For 30 years, Bro. Joe Marie has been the heart of the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, welcoming those of all faiths and all walks of life. He is known and loved by hundreds of people."

Bro. Joseph Marie was the son of the late Frederick and Rose Zakia who immigrated from Mt. Lebanon, Syria. He is survived by one brother, Richard, and one sister, Mrs. Frank O’Neil.

A wake service was held Monday, September 9th at the Little Flower Chapel, Graymoor. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, September 10, in Pilgrim Hall, Graymoor. Interment followed at the friars’ cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home of Peekskill.
