Gordon Lee Churchwell

Gordon Churchwell of Cold Spring died on Wednesday, January 8th, of a pulmonary embolism. He was 44 years old. He is survived by his wife Julie Metz, his daughter Olivia Ella, his parents Gordon and CC. Churchwell, and his sister and brothers, and nieces and nephews.

Gordon, who was a writer, was born on July 22, 1958 in Korea, and later moved with his family to Kerhonkson, New York. He graduated from Colgate University in 1981. His first book, "Pregnant Man", was published by HarperCollins in 2000. At the time of his death, he had just completed a year of research for an upcoming book "The Umami Trail", laboring tirelessly by sampling rare wines, searching for the world’s most perfect strawberry, and hunting the occasional wild boar.

In the four and a half years Gordon lived in Cold Spring, he left his mark deeply on our community. Extensively active in local organizations and causes, close and loyal friend to many, creator of magnificent meals, generous, life loving, and always exuberant, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were held at the Clinton Funeral Home and the First Presbyterian Church. Donations in Gordon’s memory may be made to the Fresh Air Fund, 633 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
