Sebastiana Leonardi Jurkovic

Born on December 4, 1924 in Bronx, NY, Sebastiana Leonardi Jurkovic, formerly of Garrison, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Vassar Brothers Hospital. She was 78.

Scrappy Italian street kid, Sebastiana loved Sinatra, Como, Caruso, the classics, and, at, forty, went crazy for the Beatles. Feminist before it was a cause, she bucked the system whenever and wherever it was necessary to ensure equal ground for her family and friends.

Whether it was silk flowere for income during the Depression, seamstress work, sweater pocket blankets or gardening (she could grow anything from a bare stick it seemed) her slender hands created beauty where before there was little. Married to Cyril Jurkovic, her best friend and eternal boyfriend in 1953, she gave birth to two sons amid the South Bronx brownstones and forged her boys into the men who will miss her and live her spirit forever.

Sebastiana is survived by her two sons, Michael and Joseph, their wives, Emily Monahan and Susan Jurkovic; her brother, Michael and his wife, Diana; her sister, Sera Morelli and her husband, Joseph; a sister-in-law, Connie Leonardi, and several loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A funeral mass was held at St. James Church in Milton, NY on Wednesday, May 21 at 11 am. Burial was at Highland Cemetery in Highland, NY.
