PV Lacrosse Causes Commotion in Sectionals
The Putnam Valley Lacrosse Tigers finished their season strong with a 13-7 record. Before their loss to Hen Hud in the semi-finals, the Tigers won 5 straight. In that 5-game winning streak they defeated Nanuet to win the league title, as well as Haldane and Rye in sectionals. They fought their way to the semi-final round of sectionals and were defeated by Hen Hud, but put up a good fight.
The Tigers defeated Haldane in the first round of sectionals 9-3. This victory was no surprise, but reaffirmed the team’s confidence going into a tougher game against Rye. In the win over the Blue Devils, Nick Strumke and Steve Amman both scored 3 goals. Mike Ammann had 2 and Joey Morgan scored 1. A.J. Babnik had 8 saves holding Haldane to just 3 goals.
In the quarterfinals the Tigers defeated Rye 10-9. Going into the 4th quarter PV lead the Garnets 9-4. The Tigers let their guard down and allowed 5 goals in the 4th quarter alone, but they were able to hold on and scored 1 goal to secure the win. Nick Strumke recorded another hat trick along with Mike Kinsley. Steve Ammann and Jeff Paulo each scored 1 goal. Mike Ammann scored 2 as well. A.J. Babnik had 11 saves.
Going into the semi-finals the Tigers had high expectations and were eager to beat the Sailors. The victory seamed slightly out of reach after losing to Hen Hud in their tournament 14-4, but the team still had high hopes. They put up a superior fight but fell short, losing 13-5.
For their first varsity season, the Tigers showed their strength early. Putnam Valley has turned some heads this year in all varsity sports but lacrosse has made the biggest impact overall. If in their first season they made it all the way to the semi-finals in sectionals their future looks intense. Things can only get better as the Tigers gain more experience at the varsity level. Congratulations on a successful season and good luck next year!
