Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Instructs Putnam Fire Police

In an interesting and unique talk the members of the Putnam County Fire Police Response Team learned the importance of training during a recent session at the Putnam Sheriffs Department.

Chief Investigator A. Gerald Schramek, an FBI Academy graduate, commanding officer of the Putnam County Sheriff Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation presented a lecture that highlighted the necessity of continuous training rather than singling out any specific subjects, such as traffic or crowd control.

His talk featured the need for a well-rounded professional approach to the position of fire police officer. He emphasized maintaining professionalism and awareness to use every drill and emergency response to hone skills that add to experience and expertise. Schramek said each fire police officer should increase his or her awareness of safety, liability, public relations and discipline while keeping order and protecting firefighters and EMTs at emergency scenes.

Schramek is respected throughout the Putnam County fire service as an advocate of well-trained and efficient fire police officers. He draws on 30 years of service as a Town of Carmel police officer, a former assistant chief in the Brewster Fire Department as well as certified state fire police instructor. He currently serves as an elected commissioner in the Brewster Fire District. Upon his appointment earlier this year as the Sheriff’s chief investigator, Schramek retired from the Carmel P.D. with the rank of captain.

Chief Schramek epitomizes the spirit of cooperation between the police agencies and the fire service in Putnam County and his service are greatly appreciated by members of the county fire police team.
