3 Birds Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Western Putnam
Total in county now stands at six
The Putnam County Health Department received notification from the New York State Department of Health that four more crows have tested positive for West Nile virus. The locations of the birds are as follows: one in Cold Spring, two in Garrison, and one in Brewster. This brings the total to six birds this year testing positive in Putnam County. As of August 8th, there have been no positive mosquitoes or human cases of West Nile virus in Putnam.
Health Department staff will apply larvicide to catch basins within the immediate vicinity where the infected birds were found. It is important to remember that primary mosquito breeding sites can be found around homes mid property. Residents are urged to continue to re-inspect areas around homes eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds. This includes removing all sources of standing water ground the home.
In addition, personal protection measures should be followed. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors. Application of a mosquito repellent containing DEET should also be considered to prevent mosquito bites. It is important to follow label directions and never allow children to apply DEET products to themselves.
Residents are urged to continue to report sightings of dead birds to the Health Department. For more information on the West Nile virus, call the West Nile virus Hotline at (845) 278-6130 or visit the Health Department’s website at: www.putnamcountyny.com.
