Adventure Author Peter Lourie Visited Haldane
Peter Lourie presented "The Hudson River: A Canoe Journey From the Mountains to the Sea" to Haldane fourth grade students on October 5th. Mr. Lourie is a well-known author of adventure books for children and adults. His power point presentation recreated the canoe journey he made the entire length of the Hudson River from its source at Lake Tear of the Clouds to Manhattan Harbor. Mr. Lourie was the first person to ever meet this challenge.
The students were very interested to see his canoe, paddles and other gear. He talked about adventure writing and the importance of journal keeping. His presentation covered the geography, ecology, history culture and literature of the river. Classroom workshops followed the group presentation.
Mr. Lourie was a mesmerizing, high-energy speaker. He presented his adventures to the students at a level that they could understand. He discussed the editing process and how persistent an author must be in order to get published. Lourie’s dynamic wit and humor kept the students actively engaged throughout his presentation. His books include: Hudson River, Anasazi, In the Path of Lewis and Clark, On the Trail of Sacagowea, and Erie Canal.
This exciting learning experience was made possible through a grant from the Haldane School Foundation.
