Jane Erskine Williams

Jane Erskine Williams, age 97, died on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at her home in Scarsdale, NY.

Born September 19, 1908, at Rogers Rock, Lake George, NY, she was the daughter of the late David L. and Alice B. (Johnston) Williams.

Professionally trained as a musician at Hollins College in VA and Peabody Institute, MD, Miss Williams specialized in the violin. In later years, under Dr. Stoeber’s instruction, she advanced to the viola. Throughout her long life, she played with small amateur groups, particularly quartets.

Family interests were important especially with her twin brother, Walter. She also traveled widely in Europe, where she often stayed with musicallyoriented German friends. Charity was a part of her life too, for example she generously donated a new Steinway piano to St. Philips Church in 2000.

Survivors include five nephews; Morton D. Williams of Garrison, NY, David L. Williams of Athens, OH, Richard R. Williams of Williamstown, MA, Robert E. Lee of Charlottesville, VA, and David C. Lee of LaQuinta, CA, and one niece, Alice Braybrook of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Two brothers, Dr. Walter J. Williams and David Williams, and two sisters, Alice Noble and Virginia Lee, predeceased her.

Memorial Services will be held at St. Philips Church in the Highlands, Route 9D, Garrison on Saturday November 5, 2005 at 1pm, followed by the interment of ashes at St. Philips Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family would request that donations be made in Miss William’s name to the St. Philips Church Highlands Music Fund.
