Adventure Author Peter Lourie Visits Haldane

Adventure Author Peter Lourie presented “The Hudson River: A Canoe Journey From the Mountains to the Sea” to Haldane fourth grade students on October 21. Mr. Lourie is a celebrated author of adventure books for children and adults. His power point presentation recreated the canoe journey he made the entire length of the Hudson River from its source at Lake Tear of the Clouds to Manhattan Harbor. Mr. Lourie was the first person to ever meet this challenge.

The students were very enthusiastic to see Mr. Lourie’s gear including his canoe and a variety of paddles. He talked about adventure writing and the importance of journal keeping. The presentation covered the geography, ecology, history, culture and literature of the river. Classroom workshops followed the group presentation.

Mr. Lourie was a mesmerizing, high-energy speaker. He presented his adventures to the students at a level that they could understand. He discussed the editing process and how persistent an author must be in order to get published. Lourie’s dynamic wit and humor kept the students actively engaged throughout his presentation. His fascinating books include: Hudson River, Anasazi, In The Path of Lewis and Clark, On the Trail of Sacagawea and Erie Canal.

This fabulous learning experience was made possible through a grant from The Haldane School Foundation.
