Philipstown Greenway Announces Essay Contest Winners

The Philipstown Greenway Committee this week announced the winners of the 22 Hikes in Philipstown Essay Contest.

Entries were received for the 18 and over and under 12 categories. In the Over 18 Category, The Philipstown Greenway Committee has awarded two grounds passes to Manitoga to Ms. Fran Hodes of Cold Spring. Ms. Hodes wrote her essay on the joys of nature drawing on Hike #6, the Trail at Little Stony Point. In the Under 12 Category, the Committee awarded Phelan McGuire of Cold Spring a gift certificate at Hudson Valley Outfitters. Ms. McGuire wrote about her family outing on Hike #4, the Charcoal Burner’s Trail. Michael McKee, chairman of the Committee, said, “Our congratulations to the winners! The essays clearly reflected their enjoyment of the special natural beauty of our Town.”

The Philipstown Greenway Committee published the annotated map, 22 Hikes in Philipstown, in July, 2005. The Essay Contest was held to encourage use of the map. Ms. Hodes said, “The map and trail descriptions are excellent. It’s a gift to the community and the best thing I’ve ever gotten in the mail!”

The guide and map describes the many miles of trails that are found in Philipstown. For each hike, ranging from an easy stroll to Arden Point to a strenuous climb up Breakneck Ridge, the hike guide provides distance, duration, difficulty level, parking information, and pertinent items of natural and historical interest.

One copy of 22 Hikes in Philipstown was mailed to every residence in Philipstown and is available for download at http://www.philipstown.com/ nysgreenway.html. Copies of the map are also available by visiting Town Hall or the Recreation Center and by visiting the contest sponsors: Boscobel, Manitoga, Hudson Valley Outfitters and the Hudson Highlands Land Trust.

The Philipstown Greenway Committee’s next project is a triathlon to be held as part of the September, 2006 Hudson River Ramble. The triathlon route will feature kayaking on the Greenway Water Trail from Garrison to Cold Spring, running inland on the Greenway Trail and bicycling on the Route 9 Greenway Bike Route. Partnering with the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, the Committee will use the event to promote the completion of the Philipstown portion of the Hudson River Greenway Trail. When all portions are completed, Greenway-designated Land and Water Trails will stretch from Battery Park in New York City to Battery Park in Albany.

The Philipstown Greenway Committee was appointed by the Philipstown Town Board in 2001 to provide local representation for New York State’s Hudson Valley Greenway Conservancy.
